B.Someday Finds a Home

by Carol Denker of Spirit Newspapers

It is very exciting news.

B.Someday Theater Company has kept their vision-to meld literature and myths into theater-and given it, and them, a permanent home. The Walking Fish Theater, at 2509 Frankford Avenue, will soon be the place where Michelle Pauls and Stan Heleva (and their daughter Astrid) both live and work.

Putting down roots gives B. Someday's vision a wonderful opportunity, to grow and expand-to flourish itself and to help all things artistic to flourish around it.

The Walking Fish Theater is currently being worked on; completion is expected in April, 2007. It is certainly part of a neighborhood renaissance: Frankford Avenue in Fishtown and Kensington is slowly but surely becoming the Frankford Arts Corridor it was designated just a few years ago.

The theater's name pays recognition to the Fishtown neighborhood, but more emphatically, it alludes to the creative process. Fish do not walk, but Michelle and Stan did not mean it as contradiction. Rather, it connotes evolution. Just like a thought becomes inspiration and that inspiration becomes a work of art—this evolutionary process is how Michelle and Stan view the artistic process. Who knows what can result when artists work together?

And working together is what Stan and Michelle have in mind. They see The Walking Fish as a space where all kinds of artists-actors, writers, dancers, poets, comedians-will use the space at Walking Fish to try out their ideas, to workshop them and to perform. Visual arts will be displayed. Connections with the community will be enhanced.

Kensington High School's Creative and Performing Arts is close to the Walking Fish and already, they have formed a partnership. Michelle is about to launch storytelling project, "Mythic Proportions", at the school any day.

"I see us as trailblazers, pioneers on the edge of a new frontier," says Michelle.

"Of Mythic Proportions" The Storytelling Project

at Kensington CAPA High School.

by Michelle Pauls

"Of Mythic Proportions" is the Storytelling Project that Michelle Pauls will help the students of Kensington CAPA High School create and perform this winter-spring '07. It is the pilot project of B. Someday's Partnership Program linking area students with artists and the community.

Starting in January, Michelle will visit one drama class at Kensington where she will help the students create a 40-minute performance piece based on their own stories and how violence may have touched their lives. Following B. Someday's mission, the piece will be personal and mythic as well as sassy and fun. After the piece is created, they will tour it to several community groups and schools in the Kensington area culminating in at least one public performance at the Walking Fish Theatre. Keep tuning in for more details.
